Edwardsville Police Traffic Enforcement Period

The Edwardsville Police Department announced that it issued 265 traffic tickets including 18 DUI tickets over a 17-day period.

Lt. Scott Evers said the tickets were issued during the city’s fourth overtime traffic enforcement this fiscal year. The event was conducted from March 5 through March 21 and over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

During these dates, Evers said officers on overtime netted seven DUIs and 47 other traffic violations, while officers on regular assignment issued 200 traffic violations and 11 DUIs.

Evers said the event is part of the city’s continued participation in a program funded through IDOT that pays for the EPD to have additional officers on overtime duty patrolling specifically for traffic violations such as impaired driving, speeding and occupant protection violations.

The EPD conducts these events randomly throughout the year. IDOT’s goal in supporting the program is to reduce traffic crash injuries and fatalities and emphasize the importance of obeying traffic laws, the costs associated with traffic citation fines and DUI costs to the public.

Evers said the next event will begin on April 9. Along with extra officers on the street during these special traffic enforcement periods, the EPD also has a zero tolerance policy in effect for alcohol related violations as well as seat belt/child safety restraint violations. In addition, they operate seatbelt enforcement zones at various locations.
