Traffic Tickets Going Up September 15th

Not too crazy about having to pay that $75 speeding ticket?

Then you really won’t like what’s coming down the pike on Sept. 15. That’s when the Illinois Supreme Court will begin allowing Madison County, and other counties state-wide, to raise the ceiling on speeding tickets to $120.

And that’s just for your run-of-the-mill, less-than-20-mph-over-the-limit speeding ticket. After Sept. 15, Madison County drivers who receive a citation for going more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit will face tickets of $140, up from the current $95.

Drivers ticketed for going more than 30 mph over the limit after Sept. 15 will face a ticket of $160, up from the current $105.

Seatbelt violations will also increase, from $55 to $60. A handful of other fines will see big increases as well. For instance, state conservation offenses, such as violations of the Boat Registration and Safety Act, and the State Wildlife Code, will jump from the current $75 to $120, according to information from the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts. Ceilings on bond card coverage will rise from $300 to $500. Special bonds will rise from $1,000 to $1,500.

The increases were triggered by a June 3 ruling by the Illinois Supreme Court. Such fees have not been increased since 1992, said Madison County Deputy Circuit Clerk Judy Nelson. In 2009, roughly 30,000 speeding tickets were issued by police agencies in Madison County, Nelson said.
